There’s a Natral Soap Factory in
Waialua!!
More than a hundred years after it first opened is doors, the Waialua Sugar Mill once again is home to the best this land has to offer. Hawaiian Bath & Body, a family-owned and operated business, is manufacturing and distributing their proprietary line of handcrafted natural soaps and skin care products from inside the “Bagasse Bin.” Hawaiian Bath & Body’s owners, husband and wife team, Jerry and Debora Driscoll, began the venture as a hobby in their Waialua, O’ahu home. “Before long, it became more than we could handle in the house!” says Debora. The coupled leased the iconic building on the grounds of the Historic Waialua Sugar Mill and the Soap Factory was born!
The Soap Factory, with its vintage décor of plantation days memorabilia donated by their neighbors, is home to Hawaiian Bath & Body’s core product line - a unique collection of natural soaps made from scratch, hand-crafted, one batch at a time, featuring island-fresh ingredients like Kukui and Macadamia nut oils, Waihole ginger and Waialua tangerines. The handcrafted skin care line also features body washes, soaking salts, lip moisturizers, body mists, lomi lomi oils, kukui nut oil and body scrubs, with new products in the works, all created, formulated and manufactured in the Soap Factory.
Since its launch, the company has earned a loyal following of customers committed to Hawaiian Bath & Body products. Customers like Lori Laupola of Waipahu write testimonials to say that, “bathing with my HBB soap makes me feel like I’m in a luxurious spa – the lather, the aroma, the way my skin feels deeply moisturized after my bath. My family and I love it!”
What separates Hawaiian Bath & Body products from the rest is that they make everything by hand, they create their own original recipes and they use absolutely no harsh chemicals, detergents or petroleum-based ingredients. Hawaiian Bath & Body uses the Cold Process soap making method – a slower more labor-intensive process that takes six weeks to produce their famous soap. “For us, it’s about offering the highest quality products available on the market, hand-crafted in Hawaii,” said Debora.
The Soap Factory and Hawaiian Bath & Body retail boutique is open to the public everyday, 9am-5pm. Hawaiian Bath & Body products are also available online at hawaiianbathbody.com.
As the popularity of the Soap Factory grows so does a dream for Historic Waialua Town. The Soap Factory has been nominated for the,“Holomua Award,” by the North Shore Chamber of Commerce. “It feels like we are doing our part to help put Waialua back in a place of prominence it deserves,” commented Jerry. With their small but growing Plantation Days Museum and the Hawaiian Bath & Body
retail boutique, the Soap Factory will continue to grow as it gives back to Historic Waialua town.
As a side note…lots of other businesses have also sprung up in and around the Waialua Sugar Mill shops. Waialua Soda Works, Dave’s Papaya Seed dressing, Waialua Coffee, new products springing up out of the Waialua Community kitchen, Island-X importer, Lon’s Custom Hardwood doors which grace our retail outlet. Our Saturday Farmers’ Market is going strong and our weekend neighbors with some of the best Kiawe chicken in town would like to serve you.
